In my dreams of the perfect beachfront getaway, I will revisit my stay at Six Shillings. It’s an ideal setting for an escape to rediscover yourself (I discovered I need to be on Harbour Island regularly), and to connect with your traveling partner(s). Of course you have to like the calming sound of the rolling surf, and the rising sun streaming in the many sets of French doors. But if you like that kind of thing, and don’t mind comfortable, tasteful decor, with large, airy spaces, then I think it’s fair to say look no further. Six Shillings had a major makeover in 2016, and now accommodates eight between the house and cottage.

The high-ceilinged master bedroom has a king bed and French doors leading out to the deck. The en suite tiled bathroom has double sinks and a walk-in shower. In addition to the master suite, there are two guest bedrooms in the main house: one with ocean view and direct access to the deck, and the other bedroom with a garden view.  Each of these bedrooms has two single beds which can be converted into a king size bed with advance notice.

25 feet from the main house, the cottage has a bedroom with 2 twin beds (they can be pushed together to make a king, with advance notice) and full bath, which can sleep two guests, and a third on a roll-away bed if it's a child as a ninth guest.

The living room is wrapped in French doors, so the room explodes with light in the morning. There is a dining area off this area. The sleek, updated kitchen has plenty of counter space and all the basic appliances you’d want (blender, coffee maker, etc.), including an extra set of plates and glasses more suitable for beach use.

The sprawling deck that wraps around much of the house is surrounded by lush foliage, and affords expansive turquoise ocean views. There is plenty of handsome and comfortable seating, including a dining table under a pergola. Despite being able to see wide stretches of the beach, and endless ocean, the house nearly disappears from view looking up from the beach. Set on nearly 2 acres, with a bounty of palms, bougainvillea, and other colorful flora, the house is quite private, and is set in the sought-after Narrows, in the northern part of the island, while still a quick and convenient golf cart ride to the center of town.
